Evergreen or Timely Articles for Your Pet Services Blog?

If you would like to write more content on your pet services blog, you might be wondering if you should lean toward evergreen or timely articles? The simple answer is you can do both. And both will be helpful. Let’s take a look.

What Are Evergreen Articles?

Evergreen articles focus on topics that are relevant year-round. Evergreen content will be as helpful in the future as it is today.

Think about the basics pet parents need to know. What questions do they ask you over and over? Those will be your evergreen topics.

Here are some examples:

If you are a professional dog walker, your evergreen articles might answer questions like “How long should a dog walk be?” and “How to choose the right dog walker?” and “How do you handle bad weather walks?”

For a grooming service, you might focus your evergreen content on topics like these: “How should I prepare my pet for their first grooming visit?” and “How can I keep hair from matting?” and “What does a grooming visit include, and why?”

Pet sitters might want to write evergreen content about “Why a meet-and-greet is important” and “What items and info do I need to leave out for my pet sitter?” and “Should I choose pet sitting or boarding?”

Dog boarding services could include the following in your evergreen content: “How to prepare a pet for boarding” and “What does a day look like at the boarding place?” and “How do you keep my pet safe while boarding?”

Evergreen content builds trust. It shows your knowledge and compassion. Visitors to your website can read your evergreen content to answer their initial questions. And you can easily repurpose evergreen articles in the future.

What Are Timely Articles?

Timely articles feel immediately relevant. They are often connected to seasons, events, news, and trends.

Think about topics pet parents need to be reminded of seasonally: Pet care in hot and cold weather, flea and tick concerns, and holiday reminders.

Timely articles might focus on local pet-related events, like rabies shots, a new pet-friendly venue, a concern about a locally spreading illness that affects pets, and even new services offered by your pet care business.

Timely articles show that you are up on trends, active in your community, eager to help your clients navigate the calendar year with their pets, and aware of local pet parents’ concerns. These articles answer immediate questions for your blog visitors and show that you are involved in the health and well-being of pets beyond your basic work.

Evergreen or Timely Content? How about Both?

The beautiful thing about a blog is that you don’t have to limit yourself. You can create both evergreen and timely content on a regular basis.

If you blog once a month, you can create an evergreen article the first month, followed by a timely article the next month. Or choose the other way around if that’s a better fit. For example, if you have seasonal tips for this month, you can write that article first. Then next month, try an evergreen topic.

If you blog once a week, you can alternate between evergreen and timely. You might choose a calendar with a little variation: first week, evergreen, focused on a basic topic; second week, seasonal; third week, evergreen, focused on a commonly asked question; fourth week, timely community update or new service.

This type of calendar is a great guide when choosing your type of content for the month. However, it will help to stay flexible. If you need to get the seasonal or timely info out sooner, then just switch things around each month.

It may help to plan out some seasonal topics for the year ahead. Then you’ll be ready with those. You can add it other timely topics as they come up. Also, you can brainstorm and sketch out some evergreen topics ahead of time, so you’ll be ready to add those to your calendar.

Some months, you might have more timely articles than evergreen, and that’s okay. Do what works best for your business and your blog visitors in that timeframe. As long as you are steadily creating evergreen content for the long run, your blog will be exactly what it needs to be.

So, what step can you take to move forward on your blog content today? Create a calendar? Write a blog article? Give it a try, have some creative fun, and watch your engagement grow.
