Questions Puppy Parents Don’t Ask Out Loud: A Content Tip for Dog Trainers

As a dog trainer, you want to create content that will resonate emotionally with puppy parents. They are struggling with how to raise their puppy, and they want to understand how training will help. One key to connecting through your content is to anticipate and answer their unspoken questions.

Raising a puppy is often a roller coaster ride. Sometimes, puppy parents wonder if their dog is crazy; at other times, they feel like their dog is making them crazy.

Following are some of the questions that come up for puppy parents at different stages, often during the adolescent months. These questions reflect their confusion, fears, hesitation, and hopes.

What’s normal? What’s not?

Am I too late? What did I miss?

How did my sweet little puppy become a monster? Why is this getting worse instead of better?

Which behaviors will my puppy outgrow? What needs help now?

Is my reaction making this worse? If I mess up, does it undo everything?

Do I need something stronger or stricter to fix this?

As puppies grow into adolescence, puppy parents may wonder what happened to that sweet little puppy they first brought home. Photo by Janet Eriksson at janetpetwriter.com

Puppy parents don’t always ask these questions out loud. They don’t want to feel like they’re doing something wrong. They don’t want to look bad. They might even be afraid of the answers. So, let your online content voice their concerns for them.

If you anticipate and answer these questions in your content, you’ll be making an emotional connection with puppy parents who may need your services. You will help them feel seen, heard, understood, not alone, not crazy. That’s how trust grows. That’s how your content keeps puppy parents engaged and wanting more.

Anticipating unspoken questions can be part of your content strategy in several ways:

Blog Posts: A blog post can focus on one question and answer, showing potential clients you understand what they’re going through and can give them hope.

FAQ: Beyond your normal FAQ page, you can have a specific FAQ for puppy parents. This FAQ is different from your logistical FAQ. You can put it on your Services page, or on a New Clients or Start Here page, on a blog post, or in an onboarding email.

Services Page: When potential clients visit your Services page, they are trying to decide if you understand their specific struggles and if you have solutions that will help. As you describe your services, you can keep their unspoken questions in mind. Let those questions shape how you present your services.

When you create content that meets pet parents in their unspoken questions, they will feel connected and want to learn more.

Now we’re trying to get the indoor temperature right from day to night, and trying to remember what spring seasonal hazards we need our pets to avoid outdoors.

Writing Tips for Busy Pet Pros

Running a pet business is time-consuming. Blogging for your business often gets put on the back burner while you focus on your pets and their pet parents. But blogging doesn’t have to be super time-consuming. There are simple ways to grow your blog while staying focused on your clients’ daily needs.

Tip 1: Keep Your Blog Posts Short

Your blog posts don’t need to be long. A simple but important tip, and answer to a common question, a quick story that will resonate with your readers is all you need. What matters is that your post speaks to the needs of your clients and prospects in simple ways that resonate. A few paragraphs on an important topic will go a long way toward building trust.

Tip 2: Use Simple Structures

Instead of worrying what to write, how to start, and where to focus next, choose a simple structure:

  • Write a quick tip, followed by a simple explanation.
  • Write a Q&A post, where you start with a common client question, and then write your answer, just as you would say it to a client in person.
  • Write a list post of 5 items you want to share with your clients. Your list post can focus on seasonal pet care or cover a specific area of concern for pet parents.

By keeping your structure simple, you will be able to quickly share valuable information and build trust with your clients and prospects.

Tip 3: Write the Way You Talk

How many things do you explain to your clients or prospects in a day. A lot, right? Your blog post can easily reflect those kinds of conversations. Just write the way you talk. Don’t overcomplicate it. Choose your topic and just say what you would tell a client standing in front of you. Not only is conversational writing easier to write, but it’s also easier for your readers to understand.

Tip 4: Done Beats Perfection Every Time

Consistency matters more than perfection in blogging. Keep showing up and writing what pet parents need to know. Don’t worry about making everything perfect. Perfection can lead to delays and obstacles. Give yourself permission to keep it simple. Just say what you want your readers to know and hit the Publish button.

This week, set a timer for 15 minutes, choose a structure from Tip 2 above, and write what you would say to a client if they were in your office. Keep it simple and hit Publish. Know that what you share with your readers is valuable because you have the answers they need.
