My Yorkie puppy, Josiah, is nearing his first birthday. I know it’ll soon be time to transition him to adult dog food. But when, exactly? And how? Can your pet pro blog help me?
The response is usually, “Ask your vet.” And I get it. As a pet parent, I understand and appreciate how there are safety limits to what you can write on your blog. Every breed is different; every dog is different. A vet who knows the dog well can give the best advice.
But I would love to see information that can help me prepare and make the best decisions. There’s a lot of guidance pet professionals can share without crossing that line of giving an answer they can’t give. Your blog doesn’t need to provide specific advice in order to be really valuable and helpful.

A pet business could explain:
- The common age range when puppies transition to adult food.
- How breed size and individual health can affect timing.
- Why puppies and adult dogs have different nutritional needs, and how puppy food and adult dog food cater to those needs.
- What problems can occur if the transition is early or late.
- Physical signs and eating habits pet parents can watch for.
- Body condition or weight distribution considerations.
- The proper way to transition, and what potential issues to watch for.
- Questions pet parents may want to ask their vet.

While you can’t make the decision about timing for us as pet parents, you can help us make better-informed decisions. Pet parents don’t just need specific answers. We also appreciate insights that help us feel informed and prepared.
A blog post that helps pet parents know what matters, what to look for, and what questions to ask will build trust. That kind of informative blog post shows how knowledgeable, collaborative, and helpful your pet business is. It shows how much you care about those milestone transitions in a puppy’s life.
I know you have important safety limits as to what you can post, and I understand and respect that. As a pet parent, I am comfortable reading posts that have the disclaimer: “Always check with your vet.”
But be encouraged that when you explain the decision-making process and the elements that go into it, that post is just as valuable as giving the answer itself. Your blog post helps us as pet parents to feel informed and calm about the decisions we need to make for our healthy pets. And your explanation gives us better questions to ask our vet.
